Family donates organs of daily-wage worker, 28; gifts 4 patients a new lease of life

The family of a 28-year-old man, who died after suffering severe head injuries, donated his organs, giving four patients awaiting transplants a chance at a new lease of life.

The man, a daily-wage worker, was carrying out roofing work at his home when he accidentally fell from the second floor on August 9. He was rushed to Dr Vitthalrao Vikhe Patil Pravara Rural Hospital in Loni, where he was treated for severe head injuries. Despite medical efforts, he was later declared brain-stem dead as per established medical criteria.

In their time of grief, his wife and brother agreed to donate his organs.

Aarti Gokhale, Pune coordinator of the Zonal Transplant Coordination Centre (ZTCC), said the family’s decision helped four patients suffering from serious illnesses.

“The family took this decision at an extremely difficult time. Their courage has given four patients a chance at a new beginning. Organ donation is a powerful act of compassion because one family’s loss can bring hope to several other families,” Gokhale said.

According to ZTCC officials, the two kidneys were allocated to KIMS Manavata Hospital in Nashik. The recipients are women aged 32 and 43 suffering from chronic kidney disease and are currently doing well.

The liver was allocated to Sahyadri Hospitals, Deccan, and the recipient is a 62-year-old man suffering from end-stage liver disease. The lungs were allocated to Dr DY Patil Medical College, Pune, for a 56-year-old man.
