Pune sizzles at 40 degrees Celsius

Pune records 40°C at Shivajinagar, with officials warning of a heatwave in the coming days. IMD advises citizens to stay indoors and hydrated.

The city on Wednesday recorded 40 degrees Celsius at Shivajinagar, according to India Meteorological Department (IMD). The temperature might rise in the coming days and the city is likely to witness heatwave conditions, said officials.

In May, for the first time, the temperature reached 40.1 degrees Celsius in the Shivajinagar, while it has crossed 40 degrees Celsius in many other areas in the city. The highest temperature was recorded as 42.9 degrees Celsius in the Dhamdhere area followed by 42.8 degrees in the Koregaon Park.

Earlier in May, the temperature was below normal for seven consecutive days. On Tuesday, the maximum temperature was recorded as 36.5 degrees in the Shivajinagar area which was below normal by 1.3 degrees Celsius. However, on Wednesday, the temperature increased by 3-4 degrees which was above- normal by 2.3 degrees Celsius.

The IMD also issued an advisory and urged the citizens to avoid going outside between 11 am and 4 pm and keep themselves hydrated.
