The position became vacant following the accidental death of NCP chief and deputy chief minister Ajit Pawar. While there had been speculation that senior leader Praful Patel might assume the role, the idea reportedly faced internal opposition, delaying any formal announcement.

An NCP leader in the PMC said the newly elected corporators met at the party office earlier in the day to discuss the leadership issue.

“All members unanimously passed a resolution recommending that Sunetra Pawar be appointed as the national president of the party. The proposal will be forwarded to the state and national units of the NCP,” the leader said.

NCP corporator Nilesh Nikam said Ajit Pawar’s death had deeply impacted not only the party but the entire state.

“It is a huge loss for the NCP. With Ajit Pawar no longer with us, there is an urgent need for someone to take charge of the party. Sunetra Pawar has closely witnessed the party’s growth and functioning. In the present circumstances, she is the right person to lead the party,” he added.

All newly elected NCP corporators signed the resolution, which has been formally submitted to the party leadership.
