‘Safai karamcharis deserve a better life’

On Tuesday, Vava directed all the administrative bodies in Pune to provide all the necessary facilities, safety equipment and machinery to the staff

PUNE Member of the National Commission for Safai Karamcharis PP Vava has said the Central and State governments are committed to the welfare of safai karamcharis. On Tuesday, Vava directed all the administrative bodies in Pune to provide all the necessary facilities, safety equipment and machinery to the staff and resolve all pending issues with immediate effect.

Vava was addressing a meeting at the divisional commissioner’s office in Pune. Problems and challenges of cleanliness staff were discussed. The meeting was attended by Pimpri Chinchwad municipal commissioner Rajesh Patil, additional divisional commissioner Anil Ramod, Pune Municipal Corporation ‘s additional commissioner Dnyaneshwar Molak, resident deputy collector Himmat Kharade and office bearers of safai karmachari unions.

Vava said, “ Educational facilities should be provided to the children of safai karamcharis. For security reasons and the high-risk nature of their job, they should be given insurance cover. Meetings should be organised wherein banking meets must be held to provide immediate loans to the kin of staff who die during work related accidents. Safai karamcharis deserve a better life”

He also said that care should be taken to ensure that the workers do not have to face difficult issues and that they are not deprived of their rights.

Vava lauded the efforts of both Pune and Pimpri Chinchwad Municipal Corporation, stating that the twin civic bodies were doing a good job in providing permanent houses to the conservancy staffers . “Action must be taken to provide benefits of central and state government schemes. All the necessary facilities should be provided to the staff along with necessary health services ,” Vava said.

Earlier, he had a meeting with the Chief Executive Officers of all the three cantonment boards where similar instructions for the welfare of safai karamcharis were given.

On March 4, the National Human Right Commission (NHRC) had issued a notice to the chief secretary of Maharashtra and Pune police commissioner seeking in connection with the deaths of four persons inside a septic tank. Four persons, including three workers, died inside a septic tank of a residential building at Loni Kalbhor near Pune on March 2. Vava visited the city as part of the review programme initiated by the government regarding the welfare of Safai Karmacharis in the wake of the four tragic deaths in Pune.
