Sawai Gandharva Bhimsen Mahotsav, Pune’s prestigious classical music festival, organised by the Arya Sangeet Prasarak Mandal, will be held between December 11 and 15 in the city.
“This will be the 67th year of the iconic music festival and will be held for five days,” said Shrinivas Joshi, executive president, Arya Sangeet Prasarak Mandal.
While the festival was first started by Pandit Bhimsen Joshi in 1952, it has grown in popularity as a classical music only festival over the past decades.
The mahotsav will be held at the Maharashtriya Mandal Krida Sankul, Mukundnagar. Last year, the mahotsav was held for the first time at Mukundnagar after Ramanbaug school denied the organisers permission to use school grounds. Officials are expecting an increase in audience keeping in mind the increase in space for audience and parking.
During its 60th year, the festival was held for six days and since then every year the festival runs over a span of five days, added Joshi. According to office bearers, it was done so to accommodate young talent and provide them with a platform.
