Gurugram woman swaps senior citizen’s ATM card, dupes him of Rs 35,000
A senior citizen in Sushant Lok-3 was duped by a woman, who allegedly swapped her ATM card with his, and later withdrew ₹35,000 from the account linked to his card, said the police.
Police said the woman on the pretext of offering the victim help in withdrawing cash from the teller machine, took his personal identification number (PIN), and swiftly handed him back a different ATM card.
The police said that Suryanarayan Mehto, a resident of Sector 56 , went to Sushant Lok to withdraw cash on August 4. After a transaction of ₹5,000, the machine stopped dispensing more cash.
Giriraj Sharma, assistant sub inspector, who is the investigating official in the case, said a woman entered the ATM room and offered help.
“She took the victim’s card and asked for his security PIN. After a few minutes, she handed him the card, saying there was some technical fault. The victim realised he had been duped when he reached his house and received a text message on his phone of a withdrawal of ₹35,000 being made from his account,” said Sharma.
Sharma said the victim checked his debit card and realised that the woman had handed him a different card of same bank. “We are probing if the woman had accomplices, or if this was the handiwork of a gang,” he said adding footage from CCTV cameras was as yet to be scrutinised
An FIR was registered on Wednesday against the accused under sections 379 (punishment for theft) and 420 (punishment for cheating) of Indian Penal Code.
