Let us take a moment to celebrate the real achievement of India’s sportspersons and their support teams at the Rio Olympic Games. Indians participated in a wide array of sporting events. We should remember that many of these athletes come from humble backgrounds and their journey to Rio has been replete with obstacles.

Their presence in the rowing lanes, the marathon tracks and the boxing rings is emblematic of their belief in their abilities and a determination to fight the odds. We should not forget their families, friends and trainers who are their support systems. Just as any other institution, competitive sport is designed around a set of rules. In some contests, it was evident that a better strategy and flawless execution were rewarded over natural flair and the gumption to take risks. We may agree or disagree with these rules, but the humility of all sportspersons who graciously accepted defeat is indeed exemplary.
They deserve to be applauded for pushing the boundaries of skill and endurance. There is an immense amount of pride to be taken in the message that this sends out the world stage: We will dig deep within ourselves to explore the limits of what is possible, even if that means walking away without any medals. No amount of gold or silver can take away this unshakable confidence.
None of this is to suggest that we should not improve or aim for better results. But let us first praise, trust and support the returning Indian contingent to make the next four years of hard work worthwhile and fulfilling.
