'David Warner has exposed Cricket Australia': AUS great says 'young players should be thankful' to senior batter
David Warner had slammed the process while stating his intention to withdraw his appeal to review the ban on him from captaining any team in Australia.
David Warner has found support among his teammates and a number of former players after withdrawing his request for a review of his captaincy ban. Veteran batter Warner issued a lengthy statement about his leadership ban review on Wednesday.
Warner slammed the review process and said that he is not prepared for his family to be put through more trauma. Former Australia captain Ian Chappell has said that Warner's withdrawal has "exposed Cricket Australia's tendencies for back-side protecting".
Chappell said that Warner may not have realistically expected to lead the Australian team even if the review process was successful but he would have wanted to lead a team in the Big Bash League. "I think Warner had hoped he might be able to lead his BBL team, Sydney Thunder, at some point. A pity because he would have been the ideal person to guide younger players on their cricketing path. Not to worry CA, because he'll still be a leader and be listened to by any cricketer who wants to get ahead," said Chappell in his column for ESPNCricinfo.
“Young players should be thankful Warner has exposed CA's tendencies for back-side protecting. They need to keep it in mind for the future. Most importantly, though, Warner's withdrawal of his review highlights how appalling the original decision to award him a lifetime leadership ban was,” he said.
Steve Smith, who was with Warner for a year from all cricket due to the pair's involvement in the 2018 ball-tampering scandal, said that a life-ban on his team mate ‘is fundamentally wrong’. Smith and Warner were stripped of their positions as captain and vice-captain of the team respectively in the wake of the scandal From my point of view, banning for life from leadership is just fundamentally wrong," Smith told reporters after Australia crushed the West Indies by 419 runs in the 2nd Test. “David served his time like I did. For us, we know he's a leader around the group, and on and off the field he's doing a tremendous job,” Smith added.
