England win ODI series

England beat Sri Lanka by 16 runs to win the fifth and final one-day international at Old Trafford today and take the series 3-2.

England beat Sri Lanka by 16 runs to win the fifth and final one-day international at Old Trafford on Saturday and take the series 3-2.

Sri Lanka, set 269 to win, finished on 252 all out with seamer Jade Dernbach taking the key wicket of Angelo Mathews, who top-scored with 62, and then clean bowling Lasith Malinga to seal victory with 10 balls to spare.

The tourists lost their last four wickets for seven runs after fast-medium bowler Tim Bresnan, who finished with three for 49, made early inroads.

Earlier England, after captain Alastair Cook won the toss, made 268 for nine in their full 50 overs.

They made a rapid start but lost wickets either side of a fourth-wicket partnership of 118 between Jonathan Trott (72) and Eoin Morgan (57).

Sri Lanka off-spinner Suraj Randiv took a career-best five for 42.
