‘If Farhan Akhtar can do a Milkha Singh, why can’t Ranveer Singh do a Kapil Dev?’

Kapil Dev is not fretting over Ranveer Singh getting his bowling action right. Director Kabir Khan is due to shoot the biopic on the 1983 World Cup-winning cricket team and its inspirational captain.

Over 34 years since that moment that also triggered India’s rise to become the epicenter of the global game, the band of Cup-winning brothers will be brought to the screen in a biopic.

Director Kabir Khan will direct the film where skipper Kapil Dev, whose unbeaten 175 against Zimbabwe and a running catch to dismiss Viv Richards in the final are part of Indian cricket folklore, are expected to be highlighted.

Ranveer Singh is scheduled to take on the challenging role of Kapil Dev, but the legendary all-rounder, who recently interacted with the key members of the film unit, is not too worried if the actor can essay his character.

“These days, these actors from the film industry, they are so good,” Kapil said during an interaction on Wednesday.

But does he expect Ranveer to get the iconic Kapil bowling action right? The former skipper, who finished his career with a world record 434 Test wickets, is not too worried. He even cites an example.

“I don’t know. When I watched Bhaag Milkha Bhaag, I could not believe Farhan Akhtar looked better than even Milkha uncle.

“It is very unfair for us to make a statement at this stage (shooting expected to start later in the year), but Farhan ko agar dekho tho yakeen nahi kar sakta hai ki koi itna achcha kar sakta hai. (If you watch Farhan, you won’t believe someone can do Milkha’s role so well).

“Think on the positive side; these actors are too good.”

Bollywood has rolled out one sports biopic after another in the last few years with MS Dhoni, Sachin Tendulkar, Mary Kom all portrayed by actors with varying degrees of success.

Will Kapil Dev’s biopic surpass them all? We’ll have to wait and see.
