The India under-19 cricket team rode a century from Manjot Kalra (122) and a 10-wicket haul from right-arm pacer Kamlesh Nagarkoti to defeat England under-19 by 334 runs in the first four-day ‘Test’ at Chesterfield on Wednesday.
Fifties in both innings from Prithvi Shaw (86 and 69) and Riyan Das (68 and 50), combined with a stellar first-innings score of 89 by Harvik Desai, meant England found themselves dumped under a pile of runs that they couldn’t wriggle out of.
Asked to bat, India made full use of the fresh pitch to grind England’s bowlers despite losing captain and opener Himanshu Rana for just six. Shaw, Desai, Das’s 68 and Kalra’s innings helped India under-19 cricket team score 519 in the first innings.
In reply, England’s openers Harry Brook and captain Max Holden put up 56 runs. However, after that the hosts started losing wickets at regular intervals, ultimately folding for 195. Nagarkoti took 5/49 while Shivam Mavi showed all-round talent by taking 4/51 with his right-arm pace.
Sensing victory after taking a 324-run lead, India scored 173/6 in 32 overs before declaring in the second innings.
England simply wilted under the pressure as they were dismissed for just 163 in 46.1 overs in the second innings. Barring Holden (60), no English batsman scored more than 20. Nagarkoti took 5/63 to end with a match haul of 10/112.
The next and final Test at Worcester begins on Monday. After that, India under-19 will play a five-match one-day series against England under-19.
