India vs New Zealand Highlights, 1st Test, Day 2: Young, Latham's stand takes NZ to 129/0 at Stumps

The batter came at a time when India were in a dire need of a partnership, and Iyer showed great composure throughout his innings to steer India's rebuild alongside Ravindra Jadeja. This morning, Iyer confidently took on Kyle Jamieson – majorly dealing in boundaries to reach three-figure mark on his Test debut.

Southee finding some nice swing in the air. However, his line against Iyer had been a little too wide outside off, allowing the batter to leave the deliveries with ease.

Two successive fours! Slapped through the covers this time. Iyer on 96. Jamieson has had a quiet start this morning. Poor lines and lengths from the New Zealand – this one was fuller and wide outside off, and Iyer pounced on it to clear the covers.

First wicket of the day. Ravindra Jadeja departs on 50. The left-hander had been facing struggle with the around-the-wicket angle into him, and he finally succumbs to it in the third over of the day. A big inside edge tracks back at stumps as Jadeja departs on 50.

Shreyas Iyer slams another boundary off Jamieson; this time behind square. Poor line from Jamieson as he keeps it short and wide outside off. All Iyer had to do was giving a slight push and use the pace of the ball. Iyer moves to 83.

Ravindra Jadeja troubled with the first delivery which angled back at him. Southee keeps his first four deliveries wide outside off before this one came back sharply towards the left-hander. However, umpire's call saves Jadeja. Maiden to start the proceedings.

Shreyas Iyer and Ravindra Jadeja return to the crease for the start of the first session on Day 2. Facing the new ball (only four overs old) will be a big challenge in the morning. Tim Southee to bowl first over.

Tim Southee bowled only six overs in the final session, but it seems he is all set to bowl with the new ball in the morning.

Even though the cracks have opened up and roughs are visible, the slowness of the pitch will remain key and it would be a good day to bat, says Dominic Cork.

Tim Southee left the field in significant discomfort during the second session of Day 1 but returned after Tea, bowling six overs in the final session of play. Southee's unavailability will further increase the burden on Jamieson as the Kiwis are playing with two seamers on this track.

The fog is still very prominent in the early morning hours as we approach the start of play.

Kyle Jamieson said after the game that there isn't much movement off the surface but is hopeful of the new ball troubling Indian batters early on Day 2.

“Not a huge amount (of movement) going on. Found some swing early and it was up and down a little bit. Hardly played the last couple of months. Nice to get back onto the park. Hopefully the new ball swings a little bit in the morning and we can get them. India fraction ahead I think. We hung around pretty well. Need a good start in the morning.”

The Kiwi spinners haven't been as effective as their pacers on the first day of the match despite getting significant turn off the surface. However, Rachin Ravindra did create some early troubles with his occasional sharp drifters, which would keep Jadeja and Axar Patel interested. Ajaz Patel, meanwhile, had to resort to bowl negative lines during the closing hours of play and was eventually reprimanded by the umpire.

Kyle Jamieson may have been a bit rusty on Day 1 having bowled four no-balls during his 15.2 overs, but showed his quality yet again as he returned the best figures among New Zealand bowlers.

In his short Test career so far, Jamieson has taken the most number of wickets against India (19 off 49 wickets). He was also the player of the match in the final of the World Test Championship.

Along with Rahane, Cheteshwar Pujara also had a struggling year in the whites. While Pujara's record hasn't been as inconsistent as the Indian stand-in captain, his performances have been shaky by his otherwise high standards.

Since the start of the year, Pujara has averaged 30.85 and is yet to breach the three-figure mark in 12 matches.

Ajinkya Rahane may have said ahead of the game that he is not too concerned about his form, but the skipper's performances throughout the year are a cause of worry. Rahane has scored at an average of merely 20.35 in 12 games.
