India vs New Zealand 1st Test, Day 5 Highlights: The first Test between India and New Zealand in Kanpur ended in a draw after bad light forced umpires to call early stumps on Day 5. Debutant Rachin Ravindra and Ajaz Patel were the last New Zealand pair out in the middle as the visitors managed 165-9 at stumps on the final day. The day started off with New Zealand requiring 280 runs to win and India needing nine wickets. The Kiwis kicked-off the action on a good note, forcing the hosts to return wicketless in the opening session. Opener Tom Latham along with night watchman William Somerville added 76 runs, helping their side reach 79/1 at Lunch on Day 5. However, India bounced back in the second session as Umesh Yadav dismissed Somerville on 36 in the first ball, courtesy to a brilliant effort by Shubman Gill in fine-leg. Williamson then joined Latham in the middle, who completed his fifty before getting out by Ashwin on 52. With the wicket, the carrom ball specialist overtook veteran cricketer Harbhajan Singh and now stands as the third-highest wicket-taker among the Indian bowlers in the red-ball format. India then started the final session picking wickets in quick succession. It all began with Ravindra Jadeja removing Ross Taylor in the final ball right before Tea. Soon after the break, New Zealand started losing wickets in clusters as Axar Patel removed Henry Nicholls on 1. Jadeja then dismissed New Zealand skipper Kane Williamson LBW on 24, handing India the much-needed advantage. Tom Blundell then lost his wicket in a rather unfortunate way after the batter played the ball off Ashwin back on the pitch but it hit one of the footmark and skid back on to the stumps. Kyle Jamieson and Tim Southee were the last two New Zealand batters to be dismissed. Catch the Highlights of India vs New Zealand 1st Test, Day 5 ...Read More
100 up for New Zealand
After a 20-ball halt, New Zealand finally manage to add a single and reach the triple digits here in Kanpur. Two runs come off the over as NZ reach 101-2
IND vs NZ: Three consecutive maiden overs
This is the third maiden overs in a row. New Zealand although not losing wickets are finding it difficult to spot the gap and rotate the strike. So far, India doing the right thing, but the question remains, can they keep it up?
Ashwin replaces Axar
Ashwin replaces Axar and starts off with a maiden over. The best part about it is the extra bounce the off-spinner generated in the final delivery. I believe India are fancying their chances here. Two maiden overs in a row.
IND vs NZ: Caught-behind appeal
Another maiden over by Umesh, which also saw an appeal for caught-behind. However, the bowler was not interested as Rahane didn't go for the review.
NZ switch gears
Following the dismissal of Somerville, New Zealand are playing cautiously but are not leaving any chances against the poor deliveries. Both Latham and Williamson have quickly added 20 runs as NZ stand one run short from reaching the triple digits.
IND vs NZ: Confident drive by Williamson
That's a confident drive by Williamson, comes down the track and lofts the ball over the bowler's head for a four. A total of eight runs come in the last over bowled by Axar as NZ reach 95/2.
Good over by Umesh
Another good over by Umesh comes to an end as just a single in the first delivery come off it. Meanwhile, Williamson is playing on 1 off 19 deliveries.
IND vs NZ: Hint of swing
Umesh Yadav is producing fire at the moment. The last delivery pitches on the line, little bit of swing and beats Williamson, almost knocking his off stump on the way. Good one so far as Williamson and Umesh share smiles. NZ: 87/2
IND vs NZ: Spinners struggle
The spinners have failed to make an impact despite the odd turn. Another over by Axar, which New Zealand batters play comfortably, fetching one run from it. NZ: 86/2
IND vs NZ: Edge results in a boundary
A boundary comes in the over bowled by Umesh but not in a very convincing manner. Takes the outside edge and flashes it little far from Rahane's reach, who is fielding at gully. He then finishes the over with a good straight drive and gets a double. NZ: 85/2
Maiden over
Axar Patel follows it up with a maiden over as India fightback right at the start of the second session. Tom Latham is playing on 35 as skipper Kane Williamson joins the opener in the middle.
Strong start by Umesh Yadav
A strong start by Umesh Yadav right after lunch. Provides the team with the much important breakthrough and bowls the over at soaring pace, just the right tempo to put the team's morale up. NZ: 80/2
IND vs NZ: Umesh Yadav strikes
Wicket off the first delivery, the start India were looking for. Umesh Yadav starts off with a short delivery and a confident Somerville tries to pull it towards the on-side, however, a brilliant effort in the deep by Shubman Gill brings an end to a brilliant innings. He departs on 36, India have their first wicket of the day. NZ: 79/2
Claps for William Somerville
Who would have thought night watchman William Sommerville will return unbeaten after the opening session on a Day 5 track. The spinner has so far scored 36, one run more than Latham, and has stitched a key 76-run stand with the opener. Look at the reception he got after the end of first session.

IND vs NZ: First session so far
New Zealand will be happier side returning after the first session as the pair Tom Latham and surprisingly night watchman William Sommerville have delivered well. The pair have added 76 runs so far, frustrating the Indian bowlers, who surely will be disappointed with how the way things have looked so far. The good news was the sharp turn Ashwin produced in his final over before lunch was called.
That's some turn
Ashwin generates extra turn off the surface, beats the batter, wicket-keeper, and the slip fielder as the pair take two byes from it. Meanwhile, the umpires have dropped the bails signaling for Lunch. NZ: 79/1 | need 205 runs to win
IND vs NZ: Good running between the wickets
Some brilliant running between the wickets by Latham and Somerville as they fetch three runs off a rare misfield by Ravindra Jadeja. Meanwhile, there's another instance of extra runs as the ball takes a direct hit at the stumps and deflects enough to allow the Kiwi pair to get that additional advantage. Two runs come off it and a quick single to end the over. A total of six runs come from it as NZ reach 76/1.
IND vs NZ: Somerville makes batting look easy
Somerville hits a poor delivery, which pitched wide off the stumps, for a cracking four as five runs come off the last over. NZ have now reached 70/1 and need 214 runs to win. Can they do it?
IND vs NZ: Back to how it began
Ajinkya Rahane switches back to the combination of Ashwin and Umesh as India desperately look for a wicket. The seamer starts off with a one-run over, ending it with a bouncer. NZ: 65/1
IND vs NZ: Ashwin back in attack!
R Ashwin is back in the attack and the bowler makes a few changes in the field. We have three close fielders on the leg side, offside is slightly open. However, no impact as one run come off the over. NZ: 64/1
IND vs NZ: Maiden over
Amidst all the chatter Axar Patel bowls a maiden over. Tight length but very little variation in speed, which make things easy for Kiwi batters. NZ 63/1
IND vs NZ: Kiwi batters keep rotating strike
The New Zealand batters keep rotating the strike as the pair extend their partnership to 60 off 157 balls. Somerville is playing on 28, while Latham is batting on 29. Plenty of chats happening in the middle, which signals frustration among Indian fielders.
IND vs NZ: Ashwin-Jadeja chat
Just one run from the over as New Zealand reach 61/1, meanwhile, we see team senior pros Ashwin and Jadeja having a discussion in the middle. Probably plotting how to go about things from here.
