Player battle - Hardik vs Narine
Mumbai all-rounder Hardik Pandya has looked to hit everything out of the park this season and more often than not, he has connected. He usually comes to bat in the middle overs where spinner Sunil Narine generally likes to operate. Hardik has hit 17 runs off 15 Narine deliveries in the past and expect these numbers to grow significantly after the completion of this clash.
Player battle - Rohit vs Chawla
Mumbai skipper Rohit Sharma will look to continue his rich run-scoring form against Kolkata and his battle with spinner Piyush Chawla will be the one to surely watch out for. The two have come up against each other quite often with Rohit slamming 146 runs off 113 Chawla deliveries. The KKR spinner will take heart from the fact that he has dismissed the right-hander once before in the IPL.
Player battle - Rana vs Hardik
Middle-order batsman Nitish Rana has been one of the few bright spots for KKR this term. Rana will come up against Hardik Pandya in this clash and numbers suggest he has struggled against him in the past. Hardik has bowled 17 deliveries to Rana, conceded 15 and dismissed the southpaw twice.
Player battle - Karthik vs Malinga
Kolkata skipper Dinesh Karthik scored a masterful 97 in his last outing but still couldn’t help his team come out victorious in the match. He will now come up against Lasith Malinga, against whom he doesn’t enjoy a good record. He has faced 15 deliveries from the Sri Lankan in the IPL, scored 12 and has been out twice.
Player battle - Lynn vs Bumrah
Kolkata opener Chris Lynn hasn’t reached the heights of previous editions and has struggled for most parts of the tournament. Against Mumbai, things aren’t going to be easy as he will have to deal with the pace and guile of Jasprit Bumrah. Lynn has faced 20 deliveries from Bumrah and has scored just 20 runs but more importantly, he has been dismissed by the MI pacer twice.
Russell lashes out
“We have a good team but if you make bad decisions then you will always lose games and that’s what we’ve been doing. If we had enough time, I could pinpoint a few games where if we just looked to bowl tighter in areas or bring in right bowlers at the right time, we could have won,” Russell said on the eve of the clash. “As a professional cricketer, to be in this position is not the most healthiest position. In terms of decision, we have been bowling wrongly at the wrong time, that’s what been causing for us to keep losing in simple ways,” Russell said on the eve of the game against Mumbai Indians.
Deja Vu for KKR?
At the moment nothing is going in favour of the Shah Rukh Khan-owned franchise, something that reminds of their disastrous show in 2009 when the team had lost nine in a row, in a 10-match winless run. This will be KKR’s last home match of the season and the team will look to win it for the fans who have come in huge numbers and packed the stadium in every match.
KKR’s losing streak
KKR are in the midst of a six-match losing streak and seemed to have lost the plot completely. Karthik led from the front with a career-best 97 not out to set a challenging 176 target for Rajasthan Royals in the last match as they looked to snap their losing streak but their pacers came a cropper and the visitors secured a thrilling three-wicket win. Starting at elimination, KKR would hope for their batting and bowling to click as a unit with just three matches to go.
Head to head
One win away from assuring their last-four berth, Mumbai Indians will look forward to take on their ‘bunny’ Kolkata Knight Riders -- against whom they have an eight-match winning streak in a 18-5 head-to-head record. The last time KKR had won against MI was four years ago. With three matches left in the league stage, the two teams clash for the first time this season tonight, with the return leg slated for May 5.
Hello and welcome
