New Zealand vs India Commentary
9:58 AM IST The captain of New Zealand - Mitchell Santner reflects on the defeat. On what went wrong, he admits that the batting didn't go to plan, saying the pitch bounced more and was quicker than expected at Eden Park. He concedes that New Zealand probably didn't adapt as well as they could have, noting that battling the extra bounce made batting difficult. He adds that the surface skidded on nicely after the rain, credits the fast bowlers for adjusting well, and says the side picked up valuable learnings late in the game that they can take into Wellington.
9:58 AM IST The Indian captain - Shubman Gill says that he is pleased with their all-round effort, particularly praising the bowling and fielding displays. He feels Rohit Sharma's brilliant run-out changed the momentum of the game, while also acknowledging the threat posed by Daryl Mitchell and Glenn Phillips, who had troubled India with their partnership during the series in India as well. Gill is delighted with the way the team came together and credits Anshul Kamboj and Gurnoor Brar for their impressive spells. He describes Kamboj as someone tailor-made for these conditions, given his ability to generate seam movement and remain effective with the old ball, while adding that Brar brings extra bounce and pace when there isn't much assistance from the surface. Gill also reflects on the challenges of adapting to the conditions following the rain interruptions, noting that the pitch became quicker and offered more seam movement after the rain. However, he feels they stuck to their natural game, with their batting making the revised target much easier to chase. Looking ahead to the Wellington game, Gill doesn't feel there are any major areas to address, stressing that consistency will be key and that replicating this performance will put them in a very good position.
9:57 AM IST To the 'Windy Welly' we go - Righto, that's that from the series opener. The rain interruptions took some shine off the occasion, but India go back with all smiles, while New Zealand are left with plenty to ponder, particularly a batting display that buckled under pressure. Both teams now head to the capital city, Wellington, for the second ODI which is set to be played at the Hnry Stadium on Saturday, November 7th. The first ball is set to be bowled at 2 am GMT (7.30 am IST). Do make sure to be with us in advance for the buildup and all other updates. Until then, take care, ADIOS!
9:54 AM IST PLAYER OF THE MATCH - Anshul Kamboj gets the award for his outstanding bowling display of 2/22. Kamboj says that the key was to hit consistent lines and lengths and not to see how the wicket was behaving. Mentions that the wobble seam was working well and that he was just using that. He states that he gets good bounce off the wicket and that it is all about hitting the right length and focusing on that.
9:48 AM IST ... The post-match Presentation ...
9:48 AM IST Short ball sinks the Kiwis - A lively pitch, a well-drilled bowling attack, and a batting lineup that never found an answer - that was the story of New Zealand's innings. India's seamers turned the short ball into a potent weapon, while their smart use of the ground's dimensions ensured every disciplined spell brought reward. Arshdeep led the way with four wickets, Brar claimed three, and Anshul Kamboj delivered a quiet masterclass, finishing with 2/22 in 10 overs, including two maidens. Against that, New Zealand’s top order never settled. Seifert, Mitchell and Phillips each flickered into life, but none of them turned the flicker into a flame, and the hosts kept stumbling their way into trouble. The scoreboard would have made grim reading if not for Blair Tickner and Jacob Duffy, who swung freely in a last-wicket stand of 39 and rescued a total that was still well below par.
