India beat New Zealand by 5 wickets (DLS method)

Commentary

9:57 AM IST To the 'Windy Welly' we go - Righto, that's that from the series opener. The rain interruptions took some shine off the occasion, but India go back with all smiles, while New Zealand are left with plenty to ponder, particularly a batting display that buckled under pressure. Both teams now head to the capital city, Wellington, for the second ODI which is set to be played at the Hnry Stadium on Saturday, November 7th. The first ball is set to be bowled at 2 am GMT (7.30 am IST). Do make sure to be with us in advance for the buildup and all other updates. Until then, take care, ADIOS!
9:58 AM IST The Indian captain - Shubman Gill says that he is pleased with their all-round effort, particularly praising the bowling and fielding displays. He feels Rohit Sharma's brilliant run-out changed the momentum of the game, while also acknowledging the threat posed by Daryl Mitchell and Glenn Phillips, who had troubled India with their partnership during the series in India as well. Gill is delighted with the way the team came together and credits Anshul Kamboj and Gurnoor Brar for their impressive spells. He describes Kamboj as someone tailor-made for these conditions, given his ability to generate seam movement and remain effective with the old ball, while adding that Brar brings extra bounce and pace when there isn't much assistance from the surface. Gill also reflects on the challenges of adapting to the conditions following the rain interruptions, noting that the pitch became quicker and offered more seam movement after the rain. However, he feels they stuck to their natural game, with their batting making the revised target much easier to chase. Looking ahead to the Wellington game, Gill doesn't feel there are any major areas to address, stressing that consistency will be key and that replicating this performance will put them in a very good position.
9:58 AM IST The captain of New Zealand - Mitchell Santner reflects on the defeat. On what went wrong, he admits that the batting didn't go to plan, saying the pitch bounced more and was quicker than expected at Eden Park. He concedes that New Zealand probably didn't adapt as well as they could have, noting that battling the extra bounce made batting difficult. He adds that the surface skidded on nicely after the rain, credits the fast bowlers for adjusting well, and says the side picked up valuable learnings late in the game that they can take into Wellington.
9:54 AM IST PLAYER OF THE MATCH - Anshul Kamboj gets the award for his outstanding bowling display of 2/22. Kamboj says that the key was to hit consistent lines and lengths and not to see how the wicket was behaving. Mentions that the wobble seam was working well and that he was just using that. He states that he gets good bounce off the wicket and that it is all about hitting the right length and focusing on that.
9:48 AM IST ... The post-match Presentation ...
9:48 AM IST Short ball sinks the Kiwis - A lively pitch, a well-drilled bowling attack, and a batting lineup that never found an answer - that was the story of New Zealand's innings. India's seamers turned the short ball into a potent weapon, while their smart use of the ground's dimensions ensured every disciplined spell brought reward. Arshdeep led the way with four wickets, Brar claimed three, and Anshul Kamboj delivered a quiet masterclass, finishing with 2/22 in 10 overs, including two maidens. Against that, New Zealand’s top order never settled. Seifert, Mitchell and Phillips each flickered into life, but none of them turned the flicker into a flame, and the hosts kept stumbling their way into trouble. The scoreboard would have made grim reading if not for Blair Tickner and Jacob Duffy, who swung freely in a last-wicket stand of 39 and rescued a total that was still well below par.
9:47 AM IST Another masterclass by the chase master - Remember the tweet that went viral after Kohli's historic night at the MCG, the one saying it's his world and the rest of us are just living in it? Virat Kohli walked out already switched on, a few hours before turning 38, and chose to celebrate by doing what he does best, hunting runs. What set this knock apart was the appetite more than the shots. Chases bring out a certain hunger in him, and it showed in a rapid fifty off just 35 balls. Virat and Gill couldn't stay till the end, but their 113-run stand had already done the damage, prising the game out of the Kiwis' hands. Although Jacob Duffy and Co. troubled the batters with the short-ball ploy, with Duffy finishing with a three-wicket haul, it was just not enough in the end.
9:45 AM IST Rain trims the chase - Conditions weren't that easy to bat on as seen in the first innings and India lost Rohit Sharma in the very first over itself which put them under a bit of pressure. However, Gill built the house with Kohli as they negotiated the new-ball phase. The two rode the bounce well and kept finding runs here and there as the Kiwi seamers operated with the same template of hitting the ball hard into the pitch. Then the heavens had their say. A frustrating rain delay of a good hour and a half chopped the game down to 40 overs, and when the clouds came back for a second round, the chase shrank again to 32 overs, with a DLS target of 143.
9:43 AM IST Men in Blue get the job done - It wasn't the smoothest of finishes, with wickets quickly falling in the closing stages, but India have nonetheless gone 1-0 up in the five-match ODI series. India's bowling attack did the heavy lifting in this game, keeping New Zealand so far behind that they were never seen in the rearview mirror, and by the time they mounted a late charge, it was simply too little, too late.

OUT! TAKEN! The Virat Kohli show is over, but he has put India on the brink of a win here. Jacob Duffy bangs this into the pitch, on middle and leg, targeting the body of the batter. And it's a rapid one as he gallops there in just 35 balls. That's his 11th against New Zealand in this format. Short of a length, with pace taken off by Tickner. Virat waits and waits and waits on it to arrive before hammering the pull shot through mid on and mid-wicket for a cracking boundary. He raises his bat to a boisterous crowd at Eden Park. 8:47 AM IST 8.30 am GMT (2 pm IST) - Good news coming in from the ground. The rain has stopped and the covers are coming off now. We shouldn't be far away from resumption. As we write this, the word from the middle is that the revised target for India will now be 143 runs in 32 overs. Also, the game will resume at 8.45 am GMT (2.15 pm IST).
8:18 AM IST 8.11 am GMT (1.41 pm IST) - Rain has just gotten a bit too heavy and players are going off again. We know it can be frustrating, not only for the ones watching, but for the players as well. But judging by the expressions on Kohli and Gill's faces, neither seemed pleased to continue with the conditions out in the middle. The ground staff brings back the covers to protect the pitch and the squares. All we can do now is to hope that rain stops soon, so that we don't lose too many overs. We have already lost a good chunk and it will get trimmed further, unfortunately.

Kyle Jamieson to Shubman Gill, 1 run

Risky single! Dug into the surface, around off, Shubman Gill swats it wide of mid on and sets off for a run. Nathan Smith is quick to get to the ball and fires in a throw at the bowler's end but misses. Gill was a goner if there had been a direct hit.

8:05 AM IST Welcome back, folks. After just over an hour of stoppage, the umpires and players are back on the field. Let's hope there's no rain interruption from here on. The New Zealand players have taken their spots on the field. Shubman Gill and Virat Kohli are back to resume their partnership. Kyle Jamieson will complete his over. Off we go again...
8:02 AM IST 7.55 am GMT (1.25 pm IST) - We have better news coming in from Eden Park. The rain seems to have stopped, and the covers have been peeled off the pitch as well. So it looks like we are heading towards resumption now. And there we have it! The official word is that play is set to resume at 8.05 am GMT (1.35 pm IST). And the revised target for India is 167 runs and it is trimmed down to 40 overs now. So the equation reads - India need 113 runs from 175 balls (DLS). Almost ten minutes left for resumption. Stay tuned.
7:42 AM IST 7.37 am GMT (1.07 pm IST) - Pfft... Scratch the previous update. The drizzle has returned, prompting the ground staff to cover the pitch once more. Not that it was ever fully unwrapped. One cover stayed put all along. Perhaps the ground staff had a feeling the clouds weren't done, and as it turns out, they were right. We are back to the waiting game, and the clock is now ticking fast. About 20 minutes have already slipped away, which means overs are officially being trimmed down.
7:32 AM IST 7.25 am GMT (12.55 pm IST) - Good news, folks! The covers are coming off, as the rain has stopped. Ravi Shastri informs us on air that overs have started to reduce since 7.20 am GMT (12.50 pm IST), and he reckons we might lose an over or two. The two umpires are out in the middle, having a closer look at the conditions as well. Meanwhile, the ground staff are hard at work and getting the field ready, with two buggies pulling a rope across the outfield to dry it. We shall have the resumption time pretty soon, so stick around.
7:19 AM IST 7.15 am GMT (12.45 pm IST) - Umm... unfortunately, it looks like the rain has picked up now, and the ground staff are bringing in more covers. The bowler's run-up area, which had been left exposed, is now being protected as well. There's still no official word on when overs might start getting reduced.
7:13 AM IST 7.10 am GMT (12.40 pm IST) - It's still drizzling out there in Auckland. It's not that heavy, as reckoned by Shane Bond on air, but it's more of a steady drizzle/mizzle as we speak. However, it will be crucial to see how long the delay lasts, as we are not far from the point where overs begin to get trimmed. So let's hope the weather clears up and we get back to play soon.
6:58 AM IST 6.56 am GMT (12.26 pm IST) - Oh, dear! The drizzle is intensifying, and the players are asked to leave the field. Virat Kohli tucks his bat under his jersey as he makes his way off. This looks like a passing shower but for now, the groundsmen bring on the covers to protect the pitch and the square areas. The brollies are up in the crowd, with several spectators already shielding themselves in raincoats as the rain picks up by the minute.
