John Wright

Age 72New ZealandNEW ZEALAND
Left Handed Batsman

Few openers were better equipped for the demands of Test cricket than John Wright. A stubborn, technically sound left-hander, he made bowlers work for every wicket and built his game around patience and persistence. For more than a decade, he was a dependable presence at the top of New Zealand's batting order. Wright made his Test debut against England at Wellington in 1978, but it took time for the runs to translate into centuries. His most productive years came through the 1980s, when he became New Zealand's leading run-scorer in Test cricket. He also became the first New Zealander to reach 5,000 Test runs and finished his career with 5,334 runs from 82 Tests, including 12 centuries.

John retired from international cricket in 1993, but went on to build an equally significant reputation as a coach. His most influential coaching stint came with India, where he took charge in 2000 and helped shape a side that reached the 2003 World Cup final and beat Australia in a home Test series. He later returned to international coaching with New Zealand from 2010 to 2012, guiding the side to the 2011 World Cup semi-finals.

Wright's association with the Mumbai Indians added another chapter to his coaching career. He took over as the franchise's head coach in 2013, guiding them to the IPL title and Champions League T20 crown in the same year. He later moved into a talent-scouting role, where his eye for potential proved just as valuable. Among his most notable discoveries was Jasprit Bumrah, whom he identified from domestic T20 cricket and helped bring into the Mumbai Indians setup despite the fast bowler having no first-class experience at the time. From a resolute Test opener to a successful coach and talent scout, Wright has left an indelible mark on the game.
