Age 54AustraliaAUSTRALIA
Left Handed Batsman

Imposing in stature and unyielding in intent, Matthew Lawrence Hayden embodied the aggressive, front-foot dominance that defined Australian cricket's golden era at the turn of the century. Born on October 29, 1971, in Kingaroy, Queensland, the towering left-handed opening batter marched out to the crease with an intimidation factor matched by few in history. Standing tall and physically dominating the opposition, Hayden used his immense power and long reach to destroy bowling attacks worldwide, transforming the art of Test match opening into a display of relentless power.

While his initial Test appearances in the mid-1990s were sporadic, Hayden's career reached its watershed moment during Australia's iconic 2001 tour of India. Confronting a formidable spin attack on dry, turning tracks, he adapted his game plan by employing a revolutionary, long-strided sweep shot to dismantle the opposition bowlers. Hayden aggregated 549 runs in that three-Test series at an average of 109.80, cementing his place in the side and establishing a blueprint for playing spin in the subcontinent. His epochal run-scoring reached a world-record high at Perth in October 2003 against Zimbabwe, where he struck 380 off 437 balls, eclipsing Brian Lara's 375 to post the highest individual score in Test history at the time (though Lara reclaimed the record six months later with 400 not out against England).

Hayden was equally devastating in the limited-overs format, serving as a cornerstone of Australia's back-to-back ICC Cricket World Cup triumphs in 2003 and 2007. In the 2007 World Cup in the West Indies, he finished as the tournament's leading run-scorer with 659 runs at an average of 73.22, including a lightning 66-ball century against South Africa (the fastest World Cup hundred by an Australian at the time). In the IPL, Hayden famously wielded the Mongoose bat for Chennai Super Kings, winning the Orange Cap in 2009 with 572 runs.

Across 103 Tests, Hayden amassed 8,625 runs at an average of 50.73, smashing 30 centuries and 29 fifties. In 161 One-Day Internationals, he racked up 6,133 runs at an average of 43.80 with 10 centuries. Inducted into the Australian Cricket Hall of Fame in 2017, Hayden stands as one of the most destructive openers to ever wear the Baggy Green.
