Sumanta Anil Gupta, affectionately known in local cricketing circles as "Bittu," was born on February 9, 1991, in Rampurhat, Birbhum district, West Bengal. A versatile all-rounder who bats right-handed in the middle order and bowls right-arm off-break spin, his cricketing journey is a story of quiet persistence and grinding through the competitive layers of Bengal's club and division setups.
His entry into senior state cricket arrived during the 2017-18 domestic season, when he made his List A debut for Bengal against Himachal Pradesh in the Vijay Hazare Trophy on February 7, 2018. Earlier in his white-ball journey, he also made appearances in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy, establishing himself as a reliable middle-order player who could build an innings and contribute handy off-spin overs. Over the years, he developed a reputation for being a dependable, unselfish team player across Bengal's domestic squad.
After years of heavy run-scoring in the Kolkata Maidan division leagues, Sumanta earned his first-class Ranji Trophy debut for Bengal against Saurashtra in February 2023. His defining moment in red-ball cricket came during the 2025-26 Ranji Trophy campaign against Services, where he registered his maiden first-class century (a brilliant 97 that anchored the Bengal middle order).
In short-format franchise cricket, Sumanta found a major platform through the Bengal Pro T20 League, turning out prominently for outfits like the Shrachi Rarh Tigers, Kanchenjunga Warriors, and Birbhum Ironman. In the 2026 season for the Shrachi Rarh Tigers, he produced several match-turning performances in the middle order, highlighted by an explosive 60 off 40 balls against the Kolkata Tigers and a fiery 47 off 31 deliveries against the Purulia Royals.
Continuing into late 2026, he remained an integral, experienced member of Bengal's senior squad for the 2026-27 Ranji Trophy campaign, providing crucial middle-order balance and versatility.
