At the top of the list is England’s Graham Gooch, who scored a magnificent 333 runs against India at Lord’s in July 1990. His knock came in the first innings of the match and lasted for 628 minutes, during which he faced 485 balls and hit 43 boundaries and three sixes. Gooch’s innings remains the highest individual score in Tests between India and England and is considered one of the finest knocks in English Test history.
Next on the list is Karun Nair, who made headlines with his unbeaten 303 for India in Chennai in December 2016. This innings was special not just because of the triple century, but also because it was Nair’s maiden Test hundred. He batted for 565 minutes, facing 381 deliveries and hitting 32 fours and four sixes. Nair became only the second Indian after Virender Sehwag to score a triple century in Test cricket.
Alastair Cook, one of England’s most dependable openers, scored a massive 294 in Birmingham in August 2011. Cook batted for over 12 hours, occupying the crease for 773 minutes and facing 545 balls. This was one of Cook’s finest performances and played a crucial role in England’s dominant win during that series.

Sunil Gavaskar, one of India’s greatest openers, scored 221 in the fourth innings at The Oval in 1979. Chasing a huge target, Gavaskar played one of the finest innings in a fourth innings chase, batting for 490 minutes and facing 443 balls. Although India narrowly missed victory, his innings remains iconic.
Rounding off the list is Joe Root’s 218 in Chennai in February 2021. Root’s knock came in the first innings and lasted 536 minutes. He faced 377 deliveries, hitting 19 fours and two sixes. His innings set up a big win for England.
