Watch: Irfan Pathan leaves post-match interview to dance with Rashid Khan after Afghanistan stun Pakistan at World Cup

Irfan Pathan and Rashid Khan did a celebratory bhangra dance after Afghanistan defeated Pakistan in Chennai.

It was a historic night for Afghanistan on Monday as they recorded their first-ever win against Pakistan in men's ODIs. The fact that this made it two wins for them in the 2023 World Cup was an icing on the cake. Pakistan captain Babar Azam's 74 off 92 balls helped Pakistan get to a score of 282/7. Afghanistan then put up a clinical chase, which was helped by some ham-fisted fielding from the Pakistan players, and ended up winning the match by a whopping eight wickets with an over in hand.

Afghanistan were the clear underdogs on paper but they had shown that they were no pushovers at various points in their previous matches, most notably when they beat defending champions England by 69 runs earlier this month. Against Pakistan, they showed that their batters can be just as big a threat as their superstar lineup of spinners if given second chances and the Pakistan fielders' were providing plenty of those with some comical misfields.

Captain Hashmatullah Shahidi hit the winning runs with a four off the last ball of the 49th over from Afridi after which the Afghanistan players and staff stormed the field. The crowd at the Chepauk stadium had got firmly behind them as well and the players did a lap of honour after their initial celebrations.

During that lap of honour, star spinner Rashid Khan broke into a dance with former India fast bowler Irfan Pathan. Pathan was at the ground with the rest of the Star Sports team doing their analysis of the match. He left the broadcast to join Rashid in some bhangra in what has since become viral footage on social media.

While it is always the spinners, particularly Rashid Khan and Mujeeb-ur-Rahman, who are always seen as the biggest threat from Afghanistan, their batting strength was on display on Monday in Chennai. Openers Rahmanullah Gurbaz and Ibrahim Zadran gave their side a strong start while chasing 283. It was only in the 22nd over that the opening stand was broken, by which point Afghanistan already had 130 runs on the board. Shaheen Afridi dismissed Rahmanullah Gurbaz for 65 off 53 balls to give Pakistan the breakthrough but this didn't spark a collapse from the Afghans.

After the arrival of Rahmat Shah, Zadran kept up the momentum, narrowly missing out on a ton, as he lost his wicket to Hasan Ali in the 34th over, after a knock of 87 runs off 113 balls. Rahmat (77*) then built a strong partnership with captain Hashmatullah Shahidi (48*), who hammered the match-winning four.

Pakistan had posted 282/7 in 50 overs batting first. Spinner Noor Ahmad took three wickets for Afghanistan while Naveen-ul-Haq bagged two. Babar (74) and Abdullah Shafique (58) got half-centuries for Pakistan.

Speaking after the match, Zadran, who won player of the match, said, " I wanted to go out there with a positive mind and positive intent, and I did it. We (Gurbaz and himself) have played a lot of cricket with each other, we have good communication while running between the wickets as we have been playing together since under-16 days. The way Gurbaz supported me (in that opening partnership) - that helped me and we got the momentum in our favour. I am feeling great for myself and my country."
