It happened shortly after the openers managed a 100-run stand. 20-year-old Dunith Wellalage, a slow left-arm orthodox bowler delivered a flatter ball around off. Gill was beaten on his defense as the ball hit his stumps. There was immediately a loud appeal from Sri Lanka, but the umpire denied it.

Captain Dasun Shanaka then got into a small discussion with the wicketkeeper before ging up for a review. The ball was crashing into the stumps, but with the impact being outside off, Gill survived a very close call, a decision that had left Kohli amazed, who was all padded up and ready to step in next had the call gone the other way.
