The openers - captain Rohit Sharma and Shubman Gill - gave India a perfect start against Sri Lanka on Tuesday in the 1st ODI match at the Barsapara Cricket Stadium in Guwahati. Both survived very close lbw scares as well, before scoring their respective fifties in their 143-run stand. It happened shortly after the openers managed a 100-run stand. 20-year-old Dunith Wellalage, a slow left-arm orthodox bowler delivered a flatter ball around off. Gill was beaten on his defense as the ball hit his stumps. There was immediately a loud appeal from Sri Lanka, but the umpire denied it.
Captain Dasun Shanaka then got into a small discussion with the wicketkeeper before ging up for a review. The ball was crashing into the stumps, but with the impact being outside off, Gill survived a very close call, a decision that had left Kohli amazed, who was all padded up and ready to step in next had the call gone the other way.
Three deliveries later, Gill scored his 5th ODI fifty, in 51 balls and an over later took on Wellalage to score a hat-trick of boundaries. He eventually scored was dismissed by lbw after Shanaka's delivery struck him plumb in line with the leg-stump. He scored a 60-ball 70, laced with 11 boudaries.
A few overs later, debutant Dilshan Madushanka struck as Rohit chopped on the outside-off delivery. He departed scoring 83 runs in 67 balls off 9 boundaries and three sixes.
