The Pataudi Trophy between India and England and the 2021 Ashes between India and Australia were the only two instances of a five-match series comprising the second cycle of WTC. Pakistan toured West Indies for a two-Test series in 2021 which ended in a 1-1 draw, after which Sri Lanka defeated the Windies on their soil 2-0 in a two-Test series. India then defeated New Zealand 1-1 at home and inflicted a 2-0 whitewash over Sri Lanka. India did however, faced a rare series defeat when South Africa beat them 2-1 at home, but bounced back with a 2-1 win over Australia in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy to book them a spot in the WTC final.
