Dehradun: The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) is finding it difficult to finalise the names of presidents for the party’s 4 new district committees in Uttarakhand.

Despite sitting deliberating for more than four hours at a closed door meeting late on Thursday, the party leadership could not come up with a consensus.

State BJP chief Ajay Bhatt along with party national vice president Shyam Jaju and national joint secretary Shiv Prakash could narrow the list of 4 to 5 names for each committee.

To finalise one name for each committee will take some more time, said Bhatt.

“Just to shortlist names, it took us over 4 hours,” he told Hindustan Times.

Party insiders said they are cautious about selecting names for top districts posts as it can result in resentment within the state leaders.

The party is already facing infighting as in the case of Haridwar and the top leadership does not want it to escalate, some of them said.

It will take at least another meeting or two to come up with the final list, they said.

BJP chief Amit Shah during his two-day visit to the state on September 19 and 20 directed party leaders to cut down the size of the district committees from 23 to 13.

It was decided that along with the 13 committees, an additional committee would be constituted, probably for Dehradun.

The old committees have to be dissolved before the new committees can be constituted. But, the real test is to choose the district committee presidents.

Bhatt said leaders who will be left out from the selection, will be given a position with the party organization as well as the state government.

The list, once finalized will be shared with the party central leadership for final approval, he said.

The two central leaders of the party have a key role to play in the selection as the state party leaders do not want take any blame, a BJP worker, who did not want to named, said.

“Constituting district committees and choosing its presidents is a highly sensitive issue and the state party leaders want the central leadership to intervene to curb any dissentient,” the party worker said.

Bhatt said the names of the district committee presidents will be declared before the Diwali festival.
