The highway from Kathgodam (Haldwani) to Nainital will be widened to ease the increasing traffic congestion.
At present, the single lane highway, which is around 30km long, is 5.5m wide. The government plans to widen the road up to 7.5m.
The survey work of the highway widening was given to a Jaipur-based company, which has prepared a proposal. The proposal will now be sent to the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) for approval, after which the road will be widened.
PC Joshi, the superintending engineer of NHAI, said that the highway is being widened to facilitate tourist influx. He said land acquisition for the road widening will begin after the project apporoval.
Social activist Dushyant Mainali said that the Kathgodam-Nainital highway is important from the tourism point of view. “It faces heavy rush of tourists and there is immediate need of widening works so that the commuters do not face problems,” he said.
Nainital is an important tourist destination in Uttarakhand, which is visited by lakhs of tourists every year. According to police sources, on weekends around 50,000 vehicles move on the Kathgodam-Nainital highway leading to jams for hours. It is estimated that out of the total tourist influx in Uttarakhand, around 9% visit Nainital.
