DEHRADUN: The Haridwar police arrested two contract killers, who were out to shoot down a Dehradun-based property dealer, at a place near Roorkee on Tuesday.
The accused, Muqim from Haridwar and Nitin from Meerut, were on their way to Dehradun when a police team intercepted them on an overbridge. They had got the contract to kill the dealer from gangster Jitti Rawat, who is behind bars in the Haridwar jail, the police said. A stolen bike, a pistol, a country-made revolver and live cartridges were seized from the duo.
The arrests took place a month after three assailants had fatally attacked undertrial gangster Devpal Rana at a Roorkee court. In November, the Special Task Force (STF) of Uttarakhand police had arrested a sharpshooter working for an interstate gang for murdering a Haridwar-based businessman in March.
Uttarakhand additional director general of police (law and order) Ashok Kumar said the accused were headed to eliminate their target at the dealer’s office located in Nehrugram area of Dehradun on Tuesday. The contract killers had already done the recce of the location in advance.
“Acting on a tip-off received by inspector Sadhna Tyagi of Kotwali Roorkee, a case was lodged against Rawat under Section 115 (abetment of offence punishable with death or imprisonment for life if offence not committed) of IPC after which a police team was formed to nab them. The team arrested the duo near Roorkee,” Kumar said.
During interrogation, the accused told the police that they were allegedly asked by another imprisoned gangster to execute two other businessmen in Haridwar district. “Of the two accused, Nitin was arrested in September for planning two murders. He was out on bail,” Kumar said.
