Union textile minister Smriti Irani and minister of state for external affairs General VK Singh (retired) are likely to reach Pithoragarh on February 23 to take part in a week-long spring (Vasantotsav) festival.

The event is being organised by an organisation related to RSS in the district for the first time.

General Singh is scheduled to address a Sainik Sammelan, while Irani will address women from across the district, on the occasion, sources from the festival committee said.

Uttarakhand chief minister Trivendra Singh Rawat will inaugurate the festival on February 19, said Rakesh Devlal, coordinator of the festival. He added that the main feature of the spring festival is singing of the national song, Vande Mataram by over 11,000 school students on the day of the inauguration.

According to Devlal, besides cultural programmes, those based on Indian ethics and culture will be organised during the festival. This will include honouring of widows of martyred soldiers by General (retired) VK Singh.

“The festival will also promote local culture by organising several cultural programmes and also boost the local economy by providing shops to local craftsmen to sell their product at the festival,” said Devlal.

The town has been decked with flags and posters banners much before the inauguration due for February 19. “The exercise being promoted by the RSS is not only aimed at local body elections due in two months time but also for creating a saffron surge before 2019 parliamentary elections,” said Khimraj Joshi, a Congress leader in the district.
