A 34-year-old man was found living with his 65-year-old father’s body for more than three days at their home in outer Delhi’s Nihal Vihar.
Police said the son is mentally unstable. He had not informed anybody about his father’s death even though the body had started decomposing and foul smell had began to emanate.
The matter came to light on Monday evening when a family living on rent on the ground floor of the building owned by an elderly man, Satpal Singh, sensed foul smell and went to check on the father-son duo. The tenant told the police that he initially thought the stench was because of a dead rat.
“The stench increased when he reached Singh’s flat, the door was locked from inside. He knocked at the door. Singh’s son Karamjeet opened the door and the tenant saw Singh’s semi-decomposed body lying on the sofa,” said a police officer.
RS Sagar, additional DCP (outer), said the tenant raised an alarm and alerted neighbours. They initially thought the son had murdered his father. The police control room was informed. A police team reached and rushed the body to a nearby hospital. Doctors told police that the man had died almost 72 hours ago.
Karamjeet told police that his father was sleeping and had not eaten anything for the last three days. Karamjeet said he tried several times to wake up his father but he had not showed any response. Empty packets of biscuits and bread were found in the untidy room. When the police were removing Singh’s body from the room, he asked them not to disturb him.
