Ad hoc committee set up to reform higher education in Delhi

Education minister Manish Sisodia said the initiative furthers the commitment to transform the education system in the national Capital.

In order to reform higher education in the Capital, the Dialogue and Development Commission (DDC) —Delhi government’s premier think-tank that advises it on key policy issues — has set up a 17-member high-level committee. The committee is expected to make recommendations on goals for the higher education system, metrics of success, key policies to achieve these goals and actionable plan for the first three years.

Chaired by DDC vice-chairperson Jasmine Shah, the committee, which includes leaders from academia, industry, entrepreneurship and civil society, will also be tasked with creating a 10-year vision for the higher education system in Delhi.

“The goal is to create a world-class university system and some of the topmost colleges that can compete globally,” Shah said.

“This cannot happen in two or three years. So, the committee is tasked with creating a vision on what the Delhi government can work towards over a 10-year horizon,” Shah added.

Shah said the committee plans to hold its first meeting at the end of this month and to prepare its draft recommendations by the end of August. He added that the committee would look into various aspects of the higher education system, including graduates, postgraduates, researchers, professors and also for skill in the vocational sector. “We are excited and hopeful that we will come up with an implementable set of actions,” he said.
