A 21-year-old woman from Bihar came to New Delhi to sell one of her kidneys so that she could pay her boyfriend, who demanded the money before marrying her, an official of the Delhi Commission for Women (DCW) said on Wednesday.
She approached a government hospital in the national capital where doctors called the Women Helpline Number 181 and informed the police as they suspected her to be involved with a racket dealing in illegal kidney trade.
A team from the women’s panel reached the hospital first and heard her ordeal.
“She told the team that she got divorced a long time back and has been living with her parents in Bihar. There she befriended a neighbour,” Bhupender Singh, the panel’s media advocacy officer, said.
Her parents were against their marriage so she left their home and went to Moradabad in Uttar Pradesh in the hope that the man, who worked in the district, would marry her.
“During her counselling, she informed that the man agreed to marry her provided she gave him Rs 1.8 lakh. Without thinking twice she left for Delhi and approached the doctors in a government hospital for selling her kidney,” he said.
The DCW members asked her to file a complaint with the police against the man but she refused.
“Finally, we asked the Delhi Police to coordinate with Bihar Police and find her parent’s number. They took her back to Bihar yesterday (Tuesday),” said the DCW official.
The commission has forwarded the details of her case to the Bihar Women Commission with a request to assist her in taking criminal action against the man.
