21 from police, intelligence services honoured for exceptional grit

NEW DELHI: To honour grit and gallantry, several officers from the police and investigative agencies were given the President’s medal during India’s 70th Independence Day celebrations.

In all, 21 officers have been selected for the awards, including head constable Bala Nath for his outstanding performance and sub-inspector Giridhari Singh, the only Delhi Police staffer to get the President’s Police Medal for gallantry. Singh helped to crack the kidnapping-ransom case of Sudhir Raizada, the owner of Delite Cinema in Delhi.

Two officers of Delhi Police’s Special Cell, inspectors Lalit Mohan Ne gi and Hridaya Bhushan, received the Police Medal for meritorious service for arresting key gangsters and terrorists.

Negi not only gunned down gangster Neetu Dabodia and his two associates in an encounter reported from South Delhi, but also arrested dons Fazl-ur Rehaman and Munna Bajrangi.

Bhushan, who has against his name, a list of 32 encounters, during which over 45 terrorists and gangsters were eliminated, has been awarded this medal twice earlier. He also played a key role in the arrest of Abdul Karim alias Tunda, Tehsin Akhtar alias Monu, chief of Indian Mujahideen in the country.

Assistant commissioner of police Ravinder Kumar Tyagi, posted at Model Town, has been awarded the medal for his contribution at the UN mission in Angola. Other recipients include sub-inspectors Ramesh Kumar Sharma, Dharamvir Bharadwaj, Kaushal Pandey, Ramesh Kumar, Kartar Singh and Dharambir Singh.

Among the chief investigative agencies, Alok Mittal, IPS, Inspector General, National Investig ation Agency was awarded the President’s Police Medal for Distinguished Service and Ashwani Kumar Chand, IPS, DIG, CBI was awarded a Police Medal for meritorious service.

Udayan Banerjee, DIG, DSP Durgapur, CISF also received the President’s Police Medal for distinguished services.
