NEW DELHI: A 4 0-year-old e-rickshaw driver was killed on Wednesday morning after being hit by a speeding tempo in west Delhi’s Subhash Nagar. Police said the victim, identified as Matibool, a resident of West Bengal, lay bleeding on the road for close to 90 minutes but no one stopped to help him.

A rickshaw-puller, in fact, stopped near the bleeding victim and picked up and made away with Matibool’s mobile phone that was lying near him, a CCTV grab of the incident showed. A police officer said that they had obtained the footage of the incident and were examining it.
The accident took place around 5.30am but was reported to the police only around 7am. A police team later reached to the spot and rushed Matibool to a nearby hospital where doctors declared him brought dead. Doctors said that the man had died due to excessive bleeding. Police later found some documents from his pocket that helped them ascertain his identity.
According to the police, Matobool drove an e-rickshaw during the day and worked as a security guard in Subhash Nagar at night.
“We contacted his colleagues at the company where he worked as a guard. They told us that Matibool had completed his night shift and left for home around 5am,” said an officer.
Matobool, the officer said, was hit by a tempo from behind. “The tempo driver got off his vehicle immediately to take a look at the injured man. But instead of taking him to a hospital, the he got back into his tempo and drove away,” said the officer.
The officer added that most people might have ignored Matibool thinking him to be a drunkard who had passed out.
“We have formed a team to identify the killer tempo driver and arrest him. Efforts are also on to identify the rickshaw-puller who took away Matibool’s mobile phone,” the officer said.
A case of rash and negligent driving causing death has been registered.
