8-foot rod removed from man’s torso at AIIMS trauma centre

Manjeet Tarki, a resident of southeast Delhi’s Taimurnagar, was brought to the AIIMS trauma centre emergency around 9am on Saturday, with an iron rod jutting out of his arm, chest, shoulder and back. The rod was around 3 inches wide and 8 feet long.

The rod pierced his body between arms and chest, and then came out from the back after breaking the shoulder blades. He was lucky as none of the major organs or arteries were affected.

The incident happened at an under-construction building around 3am on Saturday.

“He fell from the fourth floor to the second floor and landed on several iron rods. One of the rods pierced him,” said a senior doctor at AIIMS.

The guard on duty in the area spotted the man, who is known to be mentally unstable, around 7am, and made a PCR call.

“When he was brought to us he was hemodynamically stable and was immediately shifted to the operating room. Within half an hour, the rod was taken out from the axilla -- the region where the arm connects with the shoulder. His major vessels and nerves of the right upper arm were spared. The rod was taken out successfully,” said AIIMS spokesperson, Dr Amit Gupta.

“After the man fell on the rod, he stayed pinned down till morning. After the guard discovered him, he called the police, who took the help of CATS ambulance and brought him to the AIIMS trauma centre,” Dr Gupta said.
