No longer 7 RCR? Prime minister’s address may soon be called Ekatma Marg

Race Course Road, on which the Indian Prime Minister’s official residence is located, might soon be renamed as Ekatma Marg.

New Delhi MP Meenakshi Lekhi has submitted a proposal to the New Delhi Municipal Council (NDMC) to rename this road based on the philosophy of BJP ideologue Deen Dayal Upadhyay. Delhi chief minister Arvind Kejriwal is also a member of the NDMC.
She said that the existing name, Race Course Road, “did not match with the Indian culture”. Race Course Road was named after Delhi race course— part of Delhi Race Club — established in 1940.
Lekhi, who is a member of the NDMC, in her proposal said that as the residence of the Prime Minister is on Race Course Road, the new name – Ekatma Marg – would remind every PM about “the last person of the society”.
“The nation is celebrating the birth centenary of Pandit Deen Dayal Upadhyay this year. To take the philosophy of the ‘Ekatma’ to the public at large... (Lekhi) has requested the renaming of Race Course Road under the NDMC area as Ekatma Marg,” stated an agenda of the council meeting of NDMC, which is likely to take a decision in this regard on Wednesday.
Deen Dayal Upadhyay is known for his concepts of ‘antyodaya ’ (serving the last man in the queue) and ‘ekatma’ (integral humanism).
AAP MLA Surinder Singh, however, said he would oppose the move in the council meeting on Wednesday.
Singh, a former National Security Guard (NSG) commando, said several veterans have approached him saying that if the road is indeed renamed then it should be done to honour soldiers killed in the line of duty.
