Police said that a woman named Neetu, 34, and her associate Salim Sheikh, 23, were allegedly getting the currency from Pakistan through Bangladesh. Currency notes worth Rs 3 lakh and three mobile handsets were recovered by the police.

Police said that the duo was active in Delhi, Uttar Pradesh, Bihar and West Bengal.

Police seized fake notes in the denomination of Rs1,000.

The police were working on certain leads and trying to track the gang circulating the money in parts of north India. Police said they learnt that fake currency notes were brought to Malda in West Bengal through the porous India-Bangladesh border. FromMalda, it was being handed over to couriers who brought the money to Delhi for a commission on each trip.

Police said Salim Sheikh, a Malda resident and Neetu, a Delhi resident were arrested from a DTC depot in Seelampur. Neetu had allegedly come to receive the fake notes from Salim.

Neetu confessed she had come to Delhi 18 years ago. Her husband, Ravinder, who works with an NGO had met a man named Munna, also from Malda who supplied fake notes in Delhi. Neetu told police Munna lured her into the business.

Neetu told police that she circulated the fake notes at weekly markets taking advantage of the crowd outside the markets.

Sanjeev Kumar Yadav, deputy commissioner of police, said, “Salim Sheikh told us that fake currency notes are being pushed into India by Pakistan through the porous Indo-Bangladesh Border.”
