NEW DELHI: The son of a Delhi police constable attacked a minor girl at her house in Mangolpuri on Friday with a kitchen knife, police said. The 24-year-old accused, a friend of the victim, slit the girl’s throat for pressuring him to marry her.

A police officer said they were friends for the past one-and-ahalf years. Accused Rahul Kumar was arrested within three hours of the crime. The girl, who was rushed to a hospital, received 18 stitches.
The knife was found in a public toilet where he had hidden it.
Police sources said Rahul told investigators that the 17-year-old girl had been threatening him that she would file a rape case against him if he did not marry her.
Rahul told the police that he had asked the girl to wait till Durga Puja , when she will turn 18. “He told her that they should wait for marriage till he gets a job,” said a senior police officer. The police, however, said the claims cannot be verified until the girl records her statement.
“We only have Rahul’s disclosures in which he has blamed the girl for pressuring him for marriage. We are waiting for the girl’s statement,” the officer said. The girl’s father is a sanitation worker and her mother works with Anganwadi.
The girl’s family rejected claims that she was in a relationship with Rahul. Her brother said that a few days before Ho li in March, Rahul had allegedly thrown chilli powder into the eyes of his sister and three other girls when they were in school.
The school principal had filed a complaint against Rahul at the local police post. Rahul was reportedly called and reprimanded for troubling schoolgirls. He was let off after he promised he will not do it again.
On Friday morning, the girl was alone at home. Rahul reached the girl’s house at 9am. “They got into an argument during which Rahul picked up a knife from the kitchen and attacked her,” the officer said.
The girl ran out screaming and collapsed outside her house due to excessive bleeding from the cut on her throat. Rahul panicked and fled the crime scene with the knife. The girl’s relatives, who live on the first floor of the building, rushed to her help.
“Her cousin identified Rahul as the attacker,” the officer said.
Rahul was booked for attempt to murder. More sections of IPC and Prevention of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act might be added to the FIR after the victim presses more charges, said the officer.
Rahul’s father Dhan Singh is a constable posted with the security unit . He lives in Sultanpur Majra, 400 metres away from the girl’s house.
