Manpower audit helps police deploy more men
NEW DELHI: In a bid to make the streets safe for people in South Delhi, police has undertaken an audit of its manpower resulting in more personnel deployed on the ground to bring down cases of robbery and vehicle theft.
“As a first step to bring down street crime, a manpower audit was done and 378 policemen who were posted in various offices and units were withdrawn and posted to police stations. With this, we were able to run static pickets from 5pm to 8am and 11am to 5pm,” said Ishwar Singh, DCP (south).
It was found that most of the snatchers are from the Sangam Vihar and Ambedkar Nagar area. So, a planned sealing of district was organized which proved successful, he said.
“Coupled with this, simultaneous surprise checking at different places by all the police stations in the district has led to a dip of 57% in cases of snatching and robbery as compared to last year,” said the officer.
During the period between April 1 to July 31 last year, a total of 271 and 177 cases of robbery and snatching, respectively, were reported. During the same period this year, the number of robbery and snatching stood at 103 and 181, respectively.
A total of 144 robbers and snatchers were arrested, besides 15 juveniles were also apprehended in robbery and snatching cases, said the officer.
Meetings with RWAs to ensure closure of service roads by 8pm has also helped in bringing down motor vehicle theft cases. In the period between April-July this year, a total of 333 cases were worked out with recovery of 47 cars, 29 car engines and 83 motorcycles, he said.
South Delhi police has also conducted an audit of dark stretches and written to BSES for lighting of such stretches to prevent street crime.
