Though the dense fog period didn’t remain for more than an hour, the delays in the morning and fog in other cities led to a cascading effect on evening flights to and from Delhi. Many flights were delayed by one to one and a half hour in the evening.

In the morning, seven flights to Amritsar, Mumbai, Leh, Chandigarh, Pune and Patna were delayed by up to an hour as visibility at the airport dropped to 100 metres.

“The airport witnessed very dense fog for an hour early in the morning when the runway visual range dropped to 300 metres and visibility was poor almost throughout the day,” said Director of the IGIA Met department R K Jenamani said.

Poor visibility conditions at other cities like Patna, Amritsar and Chandigarh led to rescheduling of a few flights.

“Air India's flight to Patna (IC 409), whose scheduled departure was at 7.05 am, was rescheduled at 9.30 am,” an airline official said. The airline’s evening flight to Chandigarh had to be cancelled due to very bad weather there.

Though Delhi hasn’t experienced any major flight disruptions due to fog this winter, the met department has forecast dense fog on new year.

“There could be very dense fog between 6 am and 9 am on Thursday and the scenario could be bad on new year’s day,” Jenamani said. “There is a chance dense fog could set in very early in the morning.”

Though lack of moisture in the atmosphere was preventing fog formation earlier, the met department said the conditions are favourable now.

“The westerly system is interacting with the easterly system coming from the Bay of Bengal, which has led to an increase in moisture,” he said.

Coldest day
Delhi saw the coldest day of the season as the mercury jumped to 5.2 degrees Celsius for the second time this winter, but the maximum temperature was the season’s lowest at 19.9 degrees Celsius.

At the city side, fog engulfed early morning traffic and visibility reduced to 300 meters.
