The decision was taken after the BJP held meetings with the Resident Welfare Associations (RWA) of the two localities on Thursday and decided to take on the government through means other than demonstrations.

According to BJP Leader of House in South Delhi Municipal Corporation (SDMC) and local councillor Subhash Arya, lakhs of households in the city will face a setback in their monthly budget due to the hike.

“Members of many households in Rajouri Garden feel that the increased power tariffs will badly affect their budgets. After exploring all the options, they have taken the tough decision of discontinuing their power connections,” stated Arya.

The mass application for disconnecting electricity will continue for three days. Arya stated that a representative from each household will approach the discom offices and submit their application for disconnection and surrender of meters.

“Other areas should follow suit and surrender their connections to protest the hike in power tariffs,” added Arya. Several RWAs have started debates on networking sites and started chain emails against the hike. Rajiv Kakria of GK-I RWA has said that they will hold protests and demand a rollback. “The government says the hike is due to the discoms’ loses but we have proof that the discoms are earning profits,” he said.

On Friday BJP state president Vijender Gupta and other leaders will stage demonstrations outside DERC office to protest the rise in power tariffs.
