Shanti Devi, 70, and Rasham Rani, 66, lived hardly 500 metres away in sector 3 and were attacked within 30 minutes of each other. Ironically, the police were close-by — at Shanti Devi’s house when the three robbers were on their second target.

“The robbers gained entry around 1.30am. My mother, father and brother were sleeping on the ground floor,” said Shanti Devi’s son Dilip.

Shanti Devi was taken hostage and the house ransacked. “My brother overpowered one gang member, but another stabbed my mother,” Dilip said.
While Shanti Devi’s family was witness to her brutal end, Rani’s children woke up too late.

“My mother was alone on the ground floor. The robbers entered through a window,” said Rani’s daughter Jyoti Salija.

Rani, who was stabbed on the back, rang the doorbell to raise an alarm. “We found her lying splattered with blood,” Salija said.
Police have rounded up four suspects.
