The 2009 analysis for Foreign Tourist Arrivals (FTA) to India released by tourism ministry on Wednesday showed that the US, UK and Bangladesh retained the top three slots from 2008.
The highest decline in FTAs came from Pakistan (a reduction by 46.7 per cent from 2008), UAE (32.2 per cent) and Sweden (26.4 per cent). Ministry officials said, stringent visa rules in the wake of strained relations between the two neighbours were the main reason for decline in Pakistani FTAs.
Tourism industry operators said that while the US, UK and Bangladesh had also shown a decline from 2008 figures, it was a significant boost for India’s tourism industry that the changes were not major.
A ministry spokesman said despite an overall decline in FTAs, Africa, the Americas and South East Asia showed increased in FTAs to India.
