The police personnel comprising constables and head constables have said they do not want to be deployed in Gurgaon because the cost of living there was very high and the city was highly polluted and unsafe.

“Currently, I am sitting on 400 transfer orders that the police personnel of our department have got from the higher authorities using their contacts because I have refused to relieve them as I am already facing manpower shortage. Majority of the police field force do not want to serve in Gurgaon which they feel is a very costly city. For others, especially the traffic policemen, the city is highly polluted and unsafe as well,” said Gurgaon police commissioner S.S. Deswal.

With a geographical area of about 1183 sq kms, Gurgaon has 2923 field policemen as against the sanctioned posts of 4127 at present.

The police commissioner said the police personnel could not afford to take accommodation on rent as the room tariffs in Gurgaon were quite high. The monthly salary the constables and head constables in Haryana range between Rs 12,000 and Rs 16,000.

“The rents in Gurgaon are quite high and a constable with family of two cannot afford to rent a house here. Many prefer not to bring their families along when they are transferred here,” Deswal said.

The constables also find the city quite hostile.

“In the last one month, we have witnessed four incidents when traffic constables were either hit by a speeding vehicle or were assaulted by commuters. They want to be transferred to another city. If I refuse, they will get the transfer orders released from higher authorities using their contacts,” the commissioner said.
