The 400 trains installed with fog safety device will start operations from Wednesday.

The fog safety device — being used for the first time — will map the distance from receptors placed at signals and help drivers spot the signal beforehand. The device will soon be installed in another 280 trains.
“We have installed the fog safety device in 400 trains. The number will be increased to 680 trains soon. The device, loaded with especially-built software, will tell the distance of the next signal and accordingly the driver can control speed of the train,” said SK Sharma, chief PRO, northern railway.
The fog safety device will be installed in both passenger and goods trains on all routes of northern railways.
“Our requirement is of 1,300 such devices for both passenger and goods trains and we have secured half the number,” said Sharma, adding that besides this, the railways had also taken safety initiatives such as painting the tracks with fluorescent colour.
The northern railways have also trained its drivers to handle foggy conditions. “The tested cracker burning method will be used for giving signals this time too. We keep safety above punctuality,” Sharma said.
