A Delhi court on Saturday granted bail to AAP MLA Mahinder Yadav, who was arrested earlier this week in connection with a case of rioting and assault on a public servant.

AAP MLA Mahendra Yadav from west Delhi’s Vikaspuri constituency was arrested and later granted bail in a case of rioting, damaging public property and stopping public servants from performing duties.
AAP MLA Mahendra Yadav from west Delhi’s Vikaspuri constituency was arrested and later granted bail in a case of rioting, damaging public property and stopping public servants from performing duties.

Yadav, MLA from Vikaspuri, was leading a protest demanding action against an alleged sexual offender for raping a three-year-old on Wednesday. Yadav had on Friday been sent to police custody for a day.

Metropolitan Magistrate Harvinder Singh granted bail to the legislator on the condition that he furnishes a personal bond of R 20,000 and a surety of the same amount.

Yadav, along with four others -- Rupesh Katyani, Devender Kumar, Roshan Kumar and Shailesh Kumar – was arrested for leading a violent protest in West Delhi’s Nihal Vihar.

The protest, police said, quickly escalated and a mob attacked public vehicles and tried to set one of them on fire.

Yadav’s arrest had drawn sharp protests from the ruling AAP government that accused the Modi government and the police force of targeting its legislators.

Yadav was the sixth AAP legislator to be arrested since the AAP government came to power in Delhi.

Previously, Akhilesh Tripathi, Somnath Bharti, former commando Surinder Singh, Manoj Kumar and JS Tomar were arrested on various charges. All are currently out on bail.
