AIIMS doctors’ union protests surgeon’s suspension

The All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) faculty association has protested the suspension of senior cardiac surgeon Dr A.K. Bisoi and demanded his immediate reinstatement.

Doctors are planning to march to the Director Dr R.C. Deka's office with their list of demands.

“There are five extremely sick babies waiting for an arterial switch operation in the cardiac surgery department. We want to know who would take responsibility in case of any mishap in the absence of an expert,” questioned a senior cardiac surgeon in the general body meeting held at AIIMS on Thursday evening.

When HT contacted head of the cardiac surgery department Dr A Sampath Kumar, he said, “No surgeon is indispensable. We have several experts in our department.”

The doctors are also miffed at the timing of the suspension order. “The doctors want an inquiry into the unprofessional conduct of the director and head of the cardiac department for handing over the orders at 12.30 a.m.,” said a faculty member.
