Aircel-Maxis case may have to be shut: CBI

The CBI on Thursday told the Supreme Court that it would not be possible to make out a corruption case in the Aircel-Maxis deal without cogent evidence against the beneficiaries, hinting that the agency may have to close its probe against former union minister Dayanidhi Maran.

The CBI’s submission came a day after it told the SC that the Malaysian government had turned down the plea to give bank details of Maxis owner T Ananda Krishnan. The agency has renewed its letter rotagory to which the Malaysian government has responded by seeking details of evidence against Krishnan.

Maran and Krishnan are under the CBI scanner for allegedly coercing Aircel owner C Sivasankaran to sell his stake to Maxis.

The CBI told a special bench of Justice GS Singhvi and Justice K Radhakrishnan that though it had completed its inquiry in India and Mauritius, vital information from Malaysia was awaited. It said the probe was being impeded due to the political influence of Maxis owner.
