The robbers held hostage trader Lajpat Rai Jain’s wife and his daughter and robbed them of Rs 34.60 lakh cash, 400 grams of gold jewellery, and silver coins.
The arrested persons have been identified as Jatin, Gaurav Jain, Kishor Kumar Mishra, Dinesh Kumar, Suraj, Mahender Singh Mahi and Vijay Pant. “With their arrest, we have solved five cases of robbery and dacoity. During interrogation the accused told police that the conspiracy was hatched by a family friend of Jain, Gaurav Jain, who has also been arrested," Prabhakar, deputy commissioner of police (east) said.
Police said on the day of the incident, Mishra posed as a courier boy and rang the doorbell of Jain’s house. “Veena Jain, wife of Lajpat Rai, opened the door and the rest of the robbers, along with
Mishra, barged into the house and robbed the family at gunpoint,” Prabhakar added. The accused persons fled on the motorcycle of Mahender Singh Mahi and in the car of Gaurav Jain after committing the crime.
Police said Gaurav Jain had to settle his credit card dues and decided to target his relative. “We were at our shop in Gandhi Nagar when the incident occurred. My wife and daughter were tied up and locked in room for more than an hour while the robbers ransacked the house,” Lajpat Rai Jain said.
