"Anna Hazare is the most secular movement in history of independent India. Attempts to brand it otherwise are provoked by personal interests," he posted on Twitter.
The 65-year-old director, who has given films like Bandit Queen, Elizabeth and its sequel Elizabeth: The Golden Age, is a supporter of the movement.
"Corruption has became a mindset in India. We accepted and became part of it as we thought no other way, Anna shows there is a way to it.
"For too long people of India have walked with chains of corruption around there feet. Finally they walk free on streets. Thank you Anna," he added.
