Arterial roads to have new speed limit signs soon

Before initiating a crackdown on speedsters on city roads with the help of infra-red speed camera based interceptors in a couple of months, the Delhi Police will ensure that speed limit signages are adequate in number and clearly visible.

Many city roads have faulty and inadequate signages, while on some roads these are not visible.

Two years ago, the Delhi Traffic Police had revised the speed limit on some roads. However, old signages are still seen on many of these roads, said officials.

“We have already taken up the matter with the UTTIPEC (Unified Traffic and Transportation Infrastructure (Planning & Engineering) Centre) and are discussing it with the road-owning agencies. Before introducing speed interceptors, we will ensure that all arterial roads have enough speed limit signages so that motorists cannot miss seeing them while driving,” said Sudhir Yadav, special commissioner of police (traffic).

He said the traffic police would introduce infra-red speed interceptors within a couple of months and static speed cameras within about six months.

According to the officials, traffic police are in the process of floating tenders for the speed cameras again as the first one failed due to no suitable bidders.

The traffic police are now examining the functioning of speed interceptors that can reportedly intercept vehicles even during zero visibility.
