In a strange incident, a lifeguard who had gone to perform the last rites of his brother, helped save the life of a woman who had jumped into the Yamuna. The police said that the incident occurred on Sunday at 9 am when 30-year-old Seema Kumari jumped off the ITO Bridge.
Rajesh Singh, a diver, jumped into the river after her. The police said that Kumari allegedly jumped into the river because she was depressed about her husband subjecting her to physical abuse; she was also unable to pursue further studies.
“When Kumari jumped into the river, a lifeguard and a constable were present there. The lifeguard swam and rescued her,” said a senior police officer on the condition of anonymity, as he is not authorised to speak to the media.
The woman was taken to a nearby hospital; she is out of danger. “We have recorded her statement. She told us that she was married and her husband used to regularly beat her,” added the officer. Police said Kumari’s family members have been informed about the incident.
